Under both past and present administrations, the Philippine government has relied on imprisonment to silence dissent and suppress the people’s resistance, using trumped up charges with planted evidence and common crime charges. This political imprisonment is a blatant violation of the fundamental rights to freedom of thought, expression and association.
Furthermore, the imprisonment of peace consultants and staff involved in the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) peace negotiations, is a further violation of the Joint Agreement on Safety and Immunity Guarantees (JASIG). These detentions violate not only their fundamental rights but also undermine the peace process between the GRP and the NDFP.
The continuing incarceration of NDFP peace consultants—such as Vicente Ladlad, Frank Fernandez, Adelberto Silva, and many others—represents the insincerety of the GRP in pursuing just and lasting peace. In this light it is urgent for us to support the call to free all NDFP peace consultants and all political prisoners in the Philippines!
Join us on December 3 to learn more about the real situation of political prisoners in the Philippines, how their struggle is linked to the overall struggle for a just and lasting peace in the Philippines, and the role of international solidarity.
